The Naruto Fangirl's

For a couple of months, The Naruto Fangirl's , Mojo had a crush on Sasuke Uchiha, a pouty, muscular boy with black spiky hair. Sasuke didn't know she existed but then, in an important way, Sasuke himself doesn't exist.

He's a cartoon character, a regular in the Naruto manga comic-book series. Mojo is a fangirl. Mojo is 12, old enough to be self-conscious. She asked, for instance, that I identify her only by her nickname. When she discusses her condition, it's with adolescent knowingness: She pronounces herself "ridiculous to be in love with a Naruto cartoon. And still, the obsession consumes her.

With allowance and Christmas money, and through strategic alliances with her little brother, she's procured the first 15 books in the Naruto series all that are available on the ever-growing manga aisle at our Borders. By watching the original cartoons with English subtitles, she's picked up a little Japanese — erudition that she generously shares with her brother. Last week, with a Sharpie marker, she wrote "Baka" on his forehead.

Manga/animé is the most popular category, and Naruto rules it. The site lists 128,000 Naruto stories, about 10 times what you get with a reasonably popular property such as Fruits Basket — or, for that matter, 24, Hannah Montana or The X-Men. It's about 10 times more than all the various Star Treks combined. Only Harry Potter, over in the Books category, can top Naruto. The Lightning-Browed One has inspired more than 346,000 stories — but most of those, sniffs Mojo, are lousy.

Mainly, though, Mojo reads (and sometimes writes) "fan fic," short stories based on the characters she adores. She adores fanfiction.net, a 13-and-up Web site that allows fans to post their own stories about characters from books, TV shows, movies and even games. Fan fiction exists in a shadowy area of copyright law, and most of the stories posted begin with a legal fig leaf: an author's note stating that the story's writer doesn't own the famous characters who star in the story.

When Mojo began telling about manga and fan fic, that she was one of the rare girls involved. But its surprise, girls rule American manga and fan fiction, even in areas as apparently macho as Naruto. When the screen names indicate a gender, it's almost always female (Gaara'sGurl12896, sophie29, CrosswordGirl). Mojo reports that in the forums, "dudes" appear only occasionally.

Femininity is, apparently, a long-standing feature of fan fiction. Mary Ellen Curtin, studying Star Trek fan fic from the '60s and '70s, found that more than 80 percent of its writers were female. You don't need to explain why girls do it, she writes. They're taking control of the myths of their day, repurposing them for their own ends.

"I can't figure out why Mojo and her fellow fangirls have latched onto Naruto and its mostly male characters when there's a universe full of more obviously girl-friendly characters."

As Mojo's crush on moody Sasuke wanes, she's been playing the field. Lately, she's had a little thing for One Piece's Sanji, a blond ladies' man who can't bear to let a woman come to harm. And maybe for Zoro, the green-haired swordsman. Fixated on fictional characters? I'm fine with that. I figure the manga guys are no more remote or unreal than Zac Posen or Orlando Bloom. And Mojo is entirely in control of her relationship with them.
