Naruto: Rise of a Ninja (Xbox 360)

The Plot

Naruto is a worldwide phenomenon; this hyper-active ninja has a bigger fan base. The hit anime and manga series has many video games devoted to it, although some of them were nice, none were actually great games. Given the plot and deep characters, one would be surprised that none of the developers could actually make a good game out of it. Ubisoft has created a near perfect world of Naruto, with a few minor hiccups.

The game's plot is based on the first 80 episodes of the anime base on US version; it starts off with Naruto's graduation and ends with the Chunin exam. If a couple of words in the previous sentence didn't make sense, then you probably don't watch the anime. But don't worry, this won't restrict you from enjoying the game. While you play the game, the developers have tried their best to explain every bit of this weird fantasy world, but at times they skip a few important notes.

Naruto is a resident of the Konoha village, which is home to many elite ninjas. The most powerful and respected ninja is called Hokage; he's the leader and decision maker of the village. A few years back, the village was attacked by a nine-tail fox, the village Hokage defended the village against the vile creature, but perished in the process. The fox's spirit was so strong that it couldn't be destroyed, so it was to be sealed inside a human host. Naruto was the chosen host and the nine-tail fox spirit was locked in him. Naruto is unaware of the fact that he carries a monster within; though most of the village knows about it and they hate him for the same reason. Naruto wants to become the village Hokage at any cost and gain the respect of his community. This is the main plot and the game is developed around it.

Game Play

The gameplay is diverse; it includes combat, character build-up, side missions, and ramen (awesome noodles) delivery, and everything is to be done in the Konoha village.

As mentioned before, the village isn't very fond of Naruto, so you'll see almost everyone in the village with an angry face above them, which indicates that they hate you. You'll be able to gain their respect by doing missions for them or for the village, these missions can include delivering ramen or finding lost goods and so on.

The village map will show you important story missions as well as side missions, doing both will result in money, skill points as well as smiley faces. The more smiley faces you earn the more the villagers start liking you.

There are various shops in the villages that'll provide you with weapons, skills, and healing ramen. Once you're ready, you can take vital story missions which will send you outside the Konoha village. In the outside world you'll encounter many bandits; these are good for learning the basic combat moves and jutsu or Complex Ninja technique.

Most of the game is played in the third person camera angle, but while fighting the camera changes to a standard side camera, like most fighting games. The fight sequences are small and the bandits can be dealt with very quickly. The controls are simple: you have horizontal and vertical attacks, as well as ranged attack with the kunai. The battle gets complex when any one ninja performs a jutsu, these moves are performed by moving the analog sticks. Every jutsu has a combination and by successfully performing the jutsu, you can inflict major damage to the opponent.

Initially, Naruto only has one jutsu called Shadow Clone; he replicates himself and uses his clones to work as a team. A very cool technique, if performed correctly. The opponent can stop you before you perform the jutsu by hitting you, but once the jutsu is complete he can only reduce the damage taken by blocking the attacks.

Naruto will develop many skills as he progresses in the game and learn the ability to double jump as well as learn "chakra concentration" and be able to climb walls as well as tall trees. He could even learn Sexy jutsu and transform into a girl.

Your first mission with your Sensei and new team mates.Your Sensei is called Kakashi and your team mates are your arch rival, Sasuke the village favorite and Sakura the Naruto loves. After the initial missions and meeting with your first villain boss, a master ninja called Demon Zabuza, Naruto is fairly strong and respected. You'll gain the ability to sprint around the village, the nearby forests as well as greater chakra concentration.

There are various missions inside the village that include finding gold coins and other hidden objects; you'll need chakra concentration to reach high places and recover hidden objects. The game gets really interesting once you enter the Chunin exam. Here you meet many great ninjas, who you have to fight to advance to the next level. You meet Gaara, Rock Lee, Kiba, and many more characters from the anime. The game can be completed in about 6-7 hours and if you complete every side mission.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode consists of tournament or single matches; you can also go online and play the Forest of Death mode, which is a non-stop chain of matches. There are many characters to choose from including Naruto, Gaara, Kiba, Rock Lee, Orochimaru, Haku, Sakura, and Kakashi. The multiplyer mode is fast and although the combat is limited to basic moves, the jutsu combination makes up for it. You can meet many players online and enjoy ranked as well as unranked or public matches.

Graphics and Sound

The game looks really amazing with cell shaded animation. It's smooth and really brings the anime to life. It looks colorful and vibrant, yet never too loud. The sound track includes many originals from the anime, including Orochimaru's theme. The graphics and sound are perfect and the Konoha village design is amazingly detailed. This is the best effort in the franchise as far as production values are considered.
